What changed in December 2025
Meta announced on October 1, 2025 that data from people's interactions with its AI products would be used to personalize ads on its social apps. The change took effect on December 16, 2025. It applies only when someone uses the same account across products2. Meta's example: chatting with Meta AI about hiking could lead to ads for hiking gear2.
Meta said conversations about religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership won't be used for ads2. Reports at the time said there's no separate opt-out: people who don't want their chats to shape their ads would have to stop using Meta AI1.
Will ads appear inside Meta AI?
Meta told TechCrunch it had no imminent plans for ads in its AI products, while Mark Zuckerberg has suggested they may come later2. We list Meta AI as "No ads" for in-chat placements and will update the status board if that changes.
Two meanings of "Meta AI ads"
People also use "Meta AI ads" to mean ads created with Meta's AI tools, such as its Advantage+ suite. That's a different topic. This page is about advertising inside, or informed by, the Meta AI assistant.
