What ChatGPT ads look like

Ads appear inside a response as a sponsored listing, labeled and visually separated from the answer. They're matched to what you're talking about, and can also draw on past chats and how you've interacted with ads before2. In the US, OpenAI is also testing Sponsored Agents, which open a separate labeled chat with a business when you choose to click, and visual ads shown while an image is generated45.

Where ChatGPT won't show ads

  • On Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans2.
  • For accounts where the user says, or OpenAI predicts, they're under 182.
  • Near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health and politics6.

What advertisers can and can't see

OpenAI says advertisers never see your chats, chat history, memories or personal details. They get aggregate performance data such as views and clicks, and OpenAI says it doesn't sell user data to advertisers26. If you choose to message a business through a Sponsored Agent, that's a separate conversation4.

Your ad controls

From an ad you can dismiss it, give feedback, or see why it was shown. Ad settings let you review ad history and interests, delete ad data in one step, and turn off ad personalization, including the use of past chats and memory2.

How to turn ads off

  • Upgrade. Plus and Pro have no ads2.
  • Opt out on Free. You can turn ads off in exchange for fewer daily free messages2. Reports say some tools, including image generation, may not be available with ads off7.

Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says they don't. Its stated principle is that ads don't influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and ads are kept separate from the response6. That is OpenAI's commitment. We haven't seen an independent audit of it.
